Indigenous Pre-Employment Program

Diesel Fitters have long been a difficult role to fill and are crucial to keeping production moving on site.  With the high demand and lack of skilled workers the resources sector is continually dipping into the same pool of skilled tradesman. With this in mind RML are taking steps in developing skills to meet the Mining and Civil Industry sector by developing an Indigenous Pre-employment Program (IEP) aimed at developing Diesel Fitters and Automotive Tradespeople. We have established a training partnership with GCIT (Gold Coast Institute of TAFE) for the delivery of mining and heavy trade industry specific training, this initiative is supported by the Australian Government.

Program Overview

RML are working to offer employment opportunities to the Indigenous community. We will recruit candidates for the program and offer on-going support right through to industry engagement.

The pre-employment Program will be delivered over a 17 week period with three intakes of 12 trainees. The training consists of three days per week blended learning of theory and practical in the Labrador workshop and a further two days’ work experience placement within local heavy industry. The first cohort will commence on 16 April 2012 and GCIT have dedicated a full time trainer to the program along with a second trainer available for support.

Along with the pre-employment training, Resources 101 will be held at the workshop five days per week for three weeks. The Resources 101 will cover safety inductions with core risk and safety skills, and is essential for working in the mines.

Training will be based at RML’s Labrador workshop which has been fitted out as a “virtual mine site workshop” giving trainees the experience of the controls and processes in place within the mines The workshop is fully equipped and an ideal training centre offering space for practical and theory learning.

Opportunities

RML are currently providing qualified tradesmen to a number of large companies throughout the Mining and Civil Construction Industry and the aim of the project is to successfully place Indigenous graduates into full time apprenticeships as Diesel Fitters, and other related trades.

Work placements will be from the Tweed to South Brisbane area however, on completion of the training the graduates will transition into full time apprenticeships within the mining and resources sector initially in Central Queensland and eventually covering services to the whole of Australia.

RML’s project management team will help the participants secure work experience placement for the nominated days. Trainees will be supported in their training and work experience placement by RML’s dedicated Indigenous Mentor who will be available to address any areas of concern with the placement, attendance, performance and personal guidance.

  • Trainees completing the pre-employment program will have a good grounding and background knowledge of the mining industry and skills that will be transferable into a live worksite
